Ways of Seeing Artwork Guide and Invigilator

Based at Unit 61 in the Mall from 13 April to 5 May, between 12noon to 6pm everyday (except Easter Sunday and Monday), you might hear Mel Brimfield’s artwork before you see it.

4’ 33” (Prepared Pianola for Roger Bannister) is a self-playing piano. It is also a “ball-run” of instruments that is triggered by pressing a large red button. For 4 minutes and 33 seconds, it plays a piece of music by the British musician, Paul Higgs. This music was inspired by the American experimental composer, John Cage. Cage’s 1952 piece 4’ 33” was a musical score that instructed performers not to play. It is 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence.

The artwork also celebrates the British athlete Sir Roger Bannister (1929 to 2018). It commemorates his performance in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics when he came fourth, missing out on a medal. Brimfield invites us to ‘listen’ to the famous race. When the music plays, you can hear fragments of national anthems and the theme tune from the television programme Ski Sunday. Two prints displayed nearby show Bannister in action.

This artwork was commissioned by the Government Art Collection for London 2012 Festival. We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to invigilate the artwork, explain its significance to passers-by, and invite them to interact with it.

This role is suitable for anyone with an interest in engaging members of the public about art, and would be particularly suited to someone wanting to enter the museums and galleries sector. As an Art Work Guide and invigilator you will work in pairs and be required to:

•Act as a friendly face to visitors and assist them in interpreting the artwork by providing information about the background behind the art installation and how the artists created the piece
•To invigilate the installation and prevent visitors from damaging the work (a security presence will also be within the venue)
•Be confident in conveying the meaning behind the artwork to groups of visitors
•Hand out promotional leaflets about London Borough of Culture events and activities

You will receive a briefing upon arrival to your shift. You can volunteer once, or choose as many shifts as you like and you have the option of doing one full shift or a split shift. Please select your shift preferences when applying. Once you submit your application, we will be in touch to let you know further details.
