Chingford May Day Fayre Artist Liaison – Cycling Volunteers

For Chingford May Day Fayre on Saturday 4 May, we pay tribute to the changing seasons, fresh growth, new life, a positive future and historic and modern traditions that celebrate community and workers unity.

Chingford May Day Fayre encourages visitors to cycle to Chingford Plain on a special road route decorated with enchantments from the Bicycle Ballet Company. At Chingford Plain, visitors are invited to build our May Day bonfire, make kindling and fear masks and visit the Wise Woman of the Forest. It will be an opportunity to go back to basics with a day in the Forest with music, song and pageantry. The day will conclude with a Feast on the Plain before we ceremonially burn our fears and kindle our hopes for the year to come.

This role is in the heart of the action supporting bike-entertainment companies performing along the cycle route towards Chingford Plain and engaging members of the public. Most of the time you will be stationed on a bike along the cycle route, though volunteers may also be in the Green Room on Chingford Plain.

Your role as an Artist Liaison will include:
•Volunteers must be able to cycle confidently and own their own bike and helmet. You will be cycling with the street performers to reach their destination (with plenty of rest stops).
•Supervise the running order with the Stage Managers and ensure performers decorating the cycle route are in the correct position throughout the event
•Support and work closely with a range of street performers, including Bicycle Ballet Company and Strictly Cycling
•Support the Stage Managers in other duties as required
•Answer the public’s questions about the event and the schedule
•Maintain excellent condition of the Green Room and backstage artist areas
•Promote and inform members of the public about other London Borough of Culture events

If you are accepted onto this role, you will be required to attend a pre-event briefing from 2pm – 3.30pm on Sunday 28 April at Chingford Plain. You will also receive a role-specific cycling health and safety briefing. Please get in touch with wflegends@groundwork.org.uk if you are unable to attend as we can make alternative arrangements, and you will still be able to volunteer.

Applications for the role close at 9am on Tuesday 23 April. We will confirm if you have been accepted onto the role on Wednesday 24 April.
