Chingford May Day Fayre - Route Riders

For Chingford May Day Fayre on Saturday 4 May, we pay tribute to the changing seasons, fresh growth, new life, a positive future and historic and modern traditions that celebrate community and workers unity.

Chingford May Day Fayre encourages visitors to cycle to Chingford Plain on a special road route decorated with enchantments from the Bicycle Ballet Company. At Chingford Plain, visitors are invited to build our May Day bonfire, make kindling and fear masks and visit the Wise Woman of the Forest. It will be an opportunity to go back to basics with a day in the Forest with music, song and pageantry. The day will conclude with a Feast on the Plain before we ceremonially burn our fears and kindle our hopes for the year to come.

Come on your bike and help cyclists get to Chingford Plain.

We are encouraging visitors to travel to May Day Fayre via cycling routes across the borough. It’s great if you have a good knowledge of the local area,, but you will be given a thorough briefing about your route

Cycling routes to Chingford will be open from 3pm. The routes are:
•Walthamstow Central to Chingford Plain – by bike – 60mins to 90mins (with rest stops)
•Leyton Midland Road to Chingford Plain – by bike – 75mins (with rest stops)
•Leytonstone High Road station – 80 mins (with rest stops)
•Highams Park – 25 mins (with rest stops)

Your role as a Route Rider will include:
•Act as a mobile visual guide for the cycling route towards Chingford Plain
•Familiarise yourself with your cycling section and check that route signage is in the correct location
•Support the Route Coordinator in other duties as required
•Report incidents into the Route Coordinator

Volunteers must be able to cycle confidently and own their own bike and helmet. You will be based on your bike cycling a smaller section of the route with a volunteer buddy (with plenty of rest stops).

If you are accepted onto this role, you will be required to attend a pre-event briefing from 2pm - 3.30pm on Sunday 28 April on Chingford Plain. You will also receive a role-specific cycling health and safety briefing. Please get in touch with wflegends@groundwork.org.uk if you are unable to attend as we can make alternative arrangements, and you will still be able to volunteer.

Applications for the role close at 9am on Tuesday 23 April. We will confirm if you have been accepted onto the role on Wednesday 24 April.
